Obituary for James Jewel Winkfield, Jr.

James Jewel Winkfield Jr, 78, died on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at VA Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He was born in Versailles, Kentucky on June 17, 1940, the son of the late James and Mattie C. Winkfield, Sr. James was a 1959 graduate of Simmons High School and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. When he was younger he exercised horses for Herbert "Herb" Stevens at Keeneland. James retired from the State of Kentucky Road Department after 26 years of employment.

James was preceded in death by his parents James Jewel Winkfield Sr., Mattie Chase Winkfield, and sister, Joyce Winkfield Washington. He leaves behind his daughter, Theresa (Omar) Christian, foster-son, William Bennett, both of Lexington, siblings, Connie Winkfield, Patricia Winkfield and Kenneth (Linda) Winkfield, all of Versailles, grandchildren, Alyssia Winkfield, Cheyenne Christian, Thaimar Winkfield, all of Lexington, William Bennett Jr, Lexington, Stefon Bennett, Stephen Bennett both of Lawrenceburg, great grandchildren, Quincy Givens, Germany Mobley, both of Lexington and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Special thanks to Dr. Steve and caregivers; Bismark Sarpong, Abraham Seen Peters, Vernita Mack, Mattie McCoy, Marie Wills, Edward Stepp and Hadeah Bolden.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at First Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Floyd Greene officiating. Visitation will be prior to the services beginning at 11:00 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Mark Brown, Victor Brown, Herbert Bush, Kenneth Moore, Tim Middleton, Cordell Washington, Kendall Washington, and Dion Washington. Honorary pallbearers will be, A.J. Chase, Gene Washington, Sherman Morton, Pete Washington, Larry Richards, and Edward Stepp.
