Gentry E. McCauley Jr.

December 8, 1928 - February 17, 2010

Gentry E. McCauley, Jr., 81, husband of Joyce Kagin Jackson McCauley, died Wednesday, February 17 at Bluegrass Community Hospital. Born in Woodford County on December 8, 1928, he was the son of the late Gentry E. Sr. and Mattie Cary McCauley and was a long time member of the Versailles Presbyterian Church. He had graduated from the Darlington School in Rome, GA in 1946, and obtained a BS in Commerce from the University of Kentucky in 1950 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He served in the ROTC at UK, and was in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his service to his country, he entered the University of Kentucky College of Law and graduated with his legal degree. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi and was admitted to the Practice of Law in September, 1959.
In 1963, Mr. McCauley was appointed to serve as Assistant County Attorney to the late David Thornton and he was then elected as Woodford County Attorney in November, 1965. He served as Woodford County Attorney from 1966 until he was appointed in August, 1967, as Commonwealth Attorney for the 14th Judicial Circuit comprised of Bourbon, Scott, and Woodford Counties, to fulfill the unexpired term of Robert Hall Smith. He was then elected as Commonwealth Attorney in November 1968 and he held that position for thirty-one years until 1999. He was also engaged in the active practice of law from 1960 until 2009. At his death, he was the senior partner in the firm of McCauley and Mattingly.
In 1997, he was awarded the Carroll Redford Award as Kentucky's outstanding Prosecutor by the Kentucky Commonwealth's Attorney Association. At that presentation, he was the longest tenured Commonwealth's Attorney in the state.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Woodford Bank and Trust Co (now Community Trust Bank, Inc.) and was a Board member and former Chairman of the Logan Helm Memorial Library.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sisters, Martha Miller and her husband Mackenzie, Mary "Woo" Rasnick and her husband Ber, all of Versailles, a daughter, Elizabeth LaMaster and her husband John C. of London, U.K, a son, Carl Hughes Jackson and his wife Jan of Plano, TX, three grandchildren, Katherine LaMaster, Coleman LaMaster, Sarah Jackson, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 2:00 pm Saturday, February 20 at the Versailles Presbyterian Church with Rev. Melissa Sevier officiating. Interment will follow in the Versailles Cemetery. Flowers are welcome while memorials are suggested to the Versailles Presbyterian Church
