William “Bill” D. Smart, 90, of Louisville, formerly of Versailles, died on February 14 at Baptist East Hospital after a short illness. Born September 26, 1919 in Bourbon County, he was the son of the late William and Anna Elizabeth Shankland Smart. He was raised in Nicholas County and was a 1937 graduate of Carlisle High School and graduate of Morehead State University. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Kentucky. He married Dottie Butts Smart in Versailles on July 19, 1943. He began teaching at Versailles High School, then served as a principal of Carroll County, Spencer County, Mt. Sterling, Harrodsburg, Montgomery County, and Scott County High Schools. He had also been principal at Stamping Ground Elementary School. He was superintendent at the Eminence, KY School District. He worked for the Department of Education in Frankfort as an Instructional Supervisor and School Organizational Specialist until his retirement in 1984. He also worked for the Federal Government in the Department of the Army and the Social Security Administration. He lived in Versailles until 2005, he moved to Louisville and most recently he was a resident of the Middletown Christian Village. Bill was a member of the First Christian Church, where he was honored as Elder Emeritus, was an associate member of the Middletown Christian Church, Louisville, and was a Mason. His passion was helping others in various ways especially through the Week of Compassion ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Many unknowing ministers in central Kentucky were recipients of his generosity for their seminary education, as were many charity organizations. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Cecil and Kenneth both of Carlisle, and in May 2000 by his wife of 57 years. In 1993, he and Dotty had celebrated 50 years of marriage. Surviving are three daughters, Sherrill (Scott) Holt of Louisville, Linda (Larry) Glass of Cincinnati, OH, and Barbara (Woody) Slade of Flora, IN, five grandchildren, Brian (Debbie) Glass, Darren (Emily) Glass, both of Cincinnati, Sheri (Travis ) Denton of Newburgh, IN, Cari (Chad) Adkins of Louisville, and Mark (Lisa) Slade of Chesterton, IN, along with seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3 PM Friday, February 19 at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home with Rev. Don Vanzant officiating. Burial will follow in the Versailles Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Glass, Darren Glass, Mark Slade, Travis Denton, Chad Adkins, Ron Smart and Bill C. Smart. Visitation is from 1 pm to time of service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Week of Compassion.
