Obituary for Robert Eugene Atkins

Robert Eugene “Bob” Atkins, 91, widower of Mary Elizabeth Lafoe Atkins, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the Brooke Knoll Village in Avon, Indiana. He was born on October 31, 1926 in Mount Vernon, Illinois, the son of the late Elzo Delbert and Dolla Mae Harmon Atkins.

Bob grew up in Birdseye, Indiana, and graduated from high school in 1944: he served in the United States Army, stationed mostly in Nome, Alaska, a place he often spoke of with great fondness. Most of his life was spent living in Kentucky. Bob was a former Mayor of Burgin, Kentucky and a Kentucky Colonel. In addition to his family, he loved trains, railroads, history, especially of WWII, and big band music.

He was considered an American grandpa by his German “granddaughter” Christina Wuertschinger. He was referred to as Dad and treated as such by his former caretaker, Angie Hardesty, who brought him and Mary several more years of independence and life through her care and love. He is survived by his fan club at Brooke Knoll Village including Katie, Karla, and Kristy. They were his support system during the ordeal he faced with the passing of his beloved wife and then as he faced his own mortality the past months.
In the great family tradition, Bob worked for the Southern Railway (later renamed Norfolk Southern) from the time he left the army until he retired in 1990. He had a lifelong love of trains, and while it was a job with all that entails, he was happy to get the opportunity to be around those great machines for his working life.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his two daughters, Cathy Atkins (Kevin Blair), Karen Wagoner (Rick), one son, Joe Atkins (Linda), sister, Marilyn LeMond, seven grandchildren, Audrey Atkins, Robbie Atkins, Kevin Atkins, Danny Atkins, Abby Wagoner, Issy Wagoner, Rickey Posey, seven great grandchildren:, Derek Cornwell, Belle Keegan and Natalie Atkins, Riley ,Ariel and Dreeytdon Posey, and one player to be named later (AKA Madeline Atkins), due October 1 +, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Rev. Chris Harper officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Monday, September 3, also at Blackburn & Ward. Burial with Military Honors will follow the service at Rose Crest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Indianapolis Honor Flight, PO Box 10, Plainfield, IN 46168 or St. Baldrick's Foundation, 1333 South Mayflower Avenue, Suite 400, Monrovia, CA 91016.
